Meta: Stop Big AI from Polluting our Climate & Communities

With your help, Green America is pushing Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies like Meta (Facebook/Instagram) to use renewable energy so communities aren’t polluted and climate change isn’t made worse by fossil fuels they are using.

We are also pushing Meta to actually sit down with the communities their data centers will impact . Imagine that, actually listening to the people.

In their pursuit to win the AI race, Meta is ditching its commitment to 100% renewable energy and building massive new natural gas plants and keeping coal-fired power online. Restarting or building fossil fuel plants will only make climate change worse and pollute communities.

AI's massive energy appetite could either accelerate the climate crisis and pollute our planet OR supercharge our renewable energy future, where communities have a real voice in how and where AI facilities are built.

Join Green America and our colleagues in demanding these leading AI companies use their vast wealth to power the energy revolution by using only renewables like solar, wind and batteries. And to actually communicate with the people where data centers might get built.

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg,

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is forecasted to dramatically increase its need for electricity 10-fold in the coming years.

As you know that means hyperscale data centers. And, that means pollution burdens in communities nationwide that are increasingly outraged by the harms Meta is causing them.

Your company previously made meaningful commitments to cutting climate change pollution by using 100% renewable energy. With gains in energy efficient chips and the opportunities to take advantage of advances in renewable energy, including virtual power plants (VPP)  that meet your climate goals while benefiting local communities, you have the opportunity to be a leader on this issue.

To prevent an increase in climate emissions, protect local communities from harmful pollution, and create community benefits and buy-in, we urge your company to:

Community Power

-Listen to families living near proposed data centers and power sources and give them a say – some communities would agree to data centers and the revenues they can bring if those centers are designed to address noise and air pollution, utilize renewable energy, minimize water usage, and provide benefits to homeowners.

Build Smart, Build Clean

-Data centers should go where they won’t harm communities. Many existing data centers create more noise, pollution, and congestion for underserved neighborhoods already dealing with unsafe and unhealthy conditions. Communities should be fully involved in the placement process to ensure everyone benefits from data center construction.

Put Efficiency First

-Design AI programs to do more with less energy by taking advantage of the most efficient chips and processing.

Zero Fossil Fuels, No Nukes, Period

-Every aspect of AI processing must run on clean energy—no coal, no gas, no nuclear. We don’t lack the right technology, and using renewable energy, with battery storage and VPPs can meet the needs for peak demand while lowering the cost of energy for your company and consumers.

Transparency

-Major AI companies like Meta are building data centers without being fully transparent about issues like the electricity and water needed to run them. Your company has the opportunity to be a good neighbor and address the concerns of community members, starting with energy bills and water usage.

The investment your company is making in developing data centers is in the billions. Please protect the communities you serve, and create benefit for your company, by ensuring you also invest in powering AI with 100% renewable energy.
