Tell Costco and Others: Credit Cards Shouldn’t Finance Climate Destruction |

I am writing as a customer who values your brand and your stated commitment to sustainability.

I recently learned about the new Better Options report endorsed by 68 organizations collectively representing over 5.6 million supporters, including Green America, Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, Stand.earth and more. Find it at betteroptionsreport.org.

Your branded credit card issuer is listed as one of the worst options for climate-responsible companies to partner with because it has provided billions to fossil fuel expansion, which is not at all aligned with achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

At the same time, they are not scaling up renewable energy financing fast enough to meet the pace of transition that climate science says is needed.

As a company with public sustainability goals, your financial partnerships matter. Co-branded credit card relationships are significant sources of revenue for banks. That gives your company real leverage to push for stronger climate policies — by choosing partners whose business models are more aligned with a climate-safe future.

The Better Options report highlights that there ARE financial institutions that do not engage in large-scale fossil fuel lending or underwriting. While no institution is perfect, some options are clearly less entangled in climate destruction.

I ask you to:

-Review the Better Options report carefully at betteroptionsreport.org

-Assess whether your current credit card partner aligns with your climate commitments

-Use your leverage to demand an end to fossil fuel expansion financing

-Incorporate climate criteria into your next credit card selection process

-Publicly commit to transitioning to a climate-aligned financial partner if necessary
