Tell Walmart: Backtracking on The Climate Is Not an Option

Walmart has a huge climate problem. Refrigerators in the companies’ stores are using potent super-pollutant gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), that are leaking and accelerating the climate crisis.

Walmart just announced that it is not planning to meet its climate goals, which means slowing progress on HFCs.

That’s not acceptable. Walmart’s annual HFC emissions are over three million metric tons, or the energy equivalent of powering all the households in San Francisco.

AND, to make matters worse, grocery stores are considering false refrigerant solutions called HFOs – which break down into PFAS (forever chemicals). Clearly we don’t need more PFAS in the environment.

With the current occupant in the White House undermining climate progress, companies like Walmart must stand up and take action.

Eliminating HFCs and adopting climate-friendly natural refrigerants is a top solution to address the climate crisis that can prevent nearly half a degree of global warming - crucial to limiting to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Walmart must act now.
