The communications industry contributes at least 2.5% of our global greenhouse gas emissions and consumes an enormous amount of electricity from fossil fuels each year. And Comcast is a big part of that.
Comcast isn’t just a cable company but a massive communications company that includes Universal and NBC. As part of our Hang Up on Fossil Fuels campaign, Comcast was added to the companies we evaluated this year, and it did not fare well. Comcast is using little renewable electricity and is lacking in robust goals to get to 100% wind and solar. AND it is not taking significant steps to address Energy Equity Issues in the energy it purchases.
NBC’s own Al Roker, the long-time weather correspondent on the Today Show, has made the connection between extreme weather events and climate change. Comcast needs to listen to its own in-house expert!
Green America strongly believes that companies like Comcast must make the transition to clean energy and use their market power to benefit the communities most harmed by fossil fuels and protect workers in clean energy supply chains.
We need much more progress in this sector to #cleanupwireless! With the harsh impacts of the climate crisis already being felt by communities worldwide, we need aggressive commitments. There’s no time to wait.
Please tell Comcast to make 100% clean energy a high priority, and do much, much more to address Energy Equity.
