Senators Manchin and Barrasso introduced their “permitting reform” bill, the Energy Permitting Reform Act. The “Energy Permitting Reform Act” is nothing but a giveaway to corporate polluters at the expense of our communities, climate, and future.
This bill’s primary goal is to roll back popular and common-sense oil and gas reforms, fast track liquefied natural gas export approvals, and overhaul bedrock environmental laws like the National Environmental Policy Act — even though the bill includes provisions that could help accelerate renewable energy development.
This legislation would do little to lower energy prices, would worsen the health of frontline communities already grappling with the fossil fuel buildout, and would make our nation less secure by increasing our dependence on dangerous, volatile fossil fuels when we should instead be working on solutions that unlock our clean energy future. Senators Manchin and Barrasso’s bill wouldn’t solve the permitting issues we are facing. Instead, Congress should provide adequate funding to the agencies that review and permit projects and focus on solutions that prioritize community input, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and justly phase out fossil fuels.
Tell your Senator to reject this dangerous legislation.
