Hang Up On Fossil Fuels

Push Major Communications Companies Towards 100% Clean Energy and Equity

Internet activities accounted for 3.7 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions as of 2019. Communications companies need to act now.

When we first launched our Hang Up on Fossil Fuels campaign in 2017, the big three telecoms companies—Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T—were using almost 0% clean energy and since have made some great progress on switching to renewable energy thanks to consumers like you calling them out. But, as we show in our latest report, AT&T and Verizon are still using a great deal of fossil fuels to drive their profits. This year we’re adding more companies from the communications industry including Charter Communications, Lumen Technology, Comcast, Cable One Inc, Altice USA, Frontier, And DISH. These seven additional companies are using little to no renewable electricity and are lacking robust goals to get to 100% clean energy.

AND none of the companies have taken significant enough steps to address energy equity Issues in the contracts they have with power companies. Green America strongly believes that as these companies make the transition to clean energy, they must use their market power to benefit the communities most harmed by fossil fuels and protect workers in clean energy supply chains. You can read more about the companies’ grades on both renewables and energy equity here. Green America also researched the mining supply chain for making the components needed for the transition and found significant environmental and human rights issues that must be addressed.

We need much more progress in this sector to #cleanupwireless! With the harsh impacts of the climate crisis already being felt by communities worldwide, we need aggressive commitments. There’s no time to wait.

Please tell the companies in the communications industry to make 100% clean energy a high priority. And urge the industry to do much, much more to address energy equity and a just supply chain.
