Cool It for the Climate

Dear Kroger: Ditch the Climate Pollutants in Your Stores

Kroger has a major problem with super-polluting, greenhouse gases called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These HFCs have thousands of times the warming capacity of carbon dioxide, and supermarkets are leaking millions of tons of them every year. Grocery stores are major HFC emitters and need to act fast to eliminate HFCs.

Kroger's recent Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Road Map falls short, projecting HFC emissions to increase before plateauing in 2025.

While other chains have taken action to reduce HFCs, Kroger has only committed to using HFC-free alternatives in 7 new stores. With nearly 2,800 existing stores, Kroger must do more to address HFCs.

Kroger needs to hear from YOU, its consumers. Whether you've taken action before or not,  please take action now. Kroger needs to hear from us again.

HFCs account for 63% of Kroger's direct climate emissions, making it a top priority to lower its climate footprint. Despite knowing about the issue for years, Kroger's efforts have not met the urgency of the situation. It's time for Kroger to end its use of HFCs in all facilities and stores by 2030 and set a robust leak reduction goal for all stores.
