Tell Amazon to Respect All Workers Rights and their Health and Safety

Amazon is a $1.35 trillion company. Is it making its profits off the backs of workers, consumers, and our environment?

Amazon takes a huge toll on people and the planet.

Across the United States, workers at Amazon facilities sustained injury at twice the rate than non-Amazon warehouses. Workers sustained more than 34,000 serious injuries on the job in 2021 alone. With record heat waves, countless workers report working without adequate protection and breaks as temperatures soared into 100s, as high as 121 degrees. Amazon has been cited by OSHA for violating worker safety in numerous facilities. The company is under investigation for misreporting injury data. And the National Labor Relations Board has cited Amazon for retaliating and conducting union busting campaigns against workers who advocate for safer conditions.

In addition, Amazon does not adequately protect workers along its supply chain from toxic chemicals. Chemical exposure is an egregious issue since 50% of occupational deaths are due to toxic chemical exposure. With over $41 billion in sales, Amazon is now the biggest apparel seller in the U.S. commanding 34% of all apparel sold online. While Amazon has finally adopted a Restricted Substance List (RSL) for its own apparel, accessories, and footwear products in North America, Europe, and Japan. It has not adopted a Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) to reduce workers exposures to toxic chemicals in the apparel manufacturing supply chain.

I urge Amazon.com to take action to address workers’ health and safety and to stop all retaliations against workers organizing to improve their working conditions.

For supply chain workers

Amazon should publicly disclose a Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) that is applied to all its own-branded textile products. The MRSL should include the elimination of all highly hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxicants (CMRs), & persistent bioaccumulative toxic (PBT) chemicals. This should also include the elimination of all per- & polyfluorinated substances, toxic flame retardants, & ortho-phthalates.

Amazon should become a signatory to the Chemical Footprint Project (CFP), participate in CFP on an annual basis, & allow for public disclosure of its score and answers to questions.

For 3rd party apparel brands, over the next year, Amazon should require all vendors to disclose which highly hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxicants (CMRs), & persistent, bioaccumulative chemicals, PFAS, toxic flame retardants, & phthalates are present in its products & the levels of consumer exposure. Within two years, Amazon should develop & implement a prohibited chemicals list for 3rd party vendors that matches its RSL & MRSL.

Additionally, Amazon should indicate through a label on the website to consumers which 3rd party vendors have matched or exceeded Amazon’s RSL & MRSL (when implemented) so that consumers are able to make informed decisions about the products they are purchasing.

Amazon should become a signatory of the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry

For U.S workers:

End all retaliatory practices, including punishing or firing workers that vocalize concerns.

Address high injury rates with a particular focus on urgently reducing the extraordinarily high rate of serious injuries for warehouse workers & delivery drivers. Amazon should engage workers in this process & take their recommendations on how to best improve safety.

End the practice of time off tasks & end unrealistic quotas. This includes ending the quotas for delivery drivers & those working in warehouses.

Address employment discrimination. Numerous individuals from protected classes have alleged experiencing discriminatory practices while working for the company. Amazon must work to understand why these practices are occurring, address the disparities, & ensure no future discrimination occurs.

Provide adequate prevention and protection from all heat-related illnesses.
