The J.M. Smucker Company, the global corporation that markets itself as a family friendly jam company, is jamming us full of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and does not want us to know about it. Over the past few years, Smucker’s has spent over $1 million fighting clear on-package GMO labeling at the state and national level.
Many of the ingredients used to make Smucker’s iconic fruit spreads as well as classic JIF peanut butter are genetically engineered. The corn syrup, beet sugar, canola, and soybean oils in Smucker’s products are all derived from genetically engineered crops.
Tell Smucker’s to make its PB&J non-GMO and support more sustainable agricultural practices!
These crops are genetically engineered to work in conjunction with toxic agrochemicals, such as glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup. Glyphosate was deemed a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization, is linked to negative health impacts, and is responsible for the development of superweeds.
While genetically engineered crops are marketed as a solution to heavy chemical use, they have in fact led to increased pesticide use and the need for more toxic pesticides, including 2,4-D (a main ingredient in Agent Orange).
The heavy reliance on these pesticides is negatively impacting soil health and biodiversity, making farmers more dependent on synthetic fertilizers. In turn, these fertilizers have entered the waterways, causing massive aquatic dead zones.
Tell Smucker’s that GMOs and their corresponding agrochemicals are not the solution.
Thanks to hearing from people like you, General Mills, Hershey, Sabra, and more have already begun to offer non-GMO products. The J.M. Smucker Company is a major international corporation, which could bring about positive changes if it began to promote sustainable agriculture and offer more non-GMO and organic products.
Join us in calling on Smucker’s to phase out the use of genetically modified ingredients, and make peanut butter & jelly great again!
Together we are changing our food system!
