We really need you to take action to save GMO labeling right now.
Please call President Obama today and ask him not to sign this new DARK Act at 866-942-5138!
Despite the thousands of calls, tweets, and emails from people like you, the US Senate and House of Representatives have passed a compromised sham GMO labeling bill last week. President Obama just has to sign it or veto it.
Please call President Obama today and ask him to veto this new DARK Act at 866-942-5138!
Though its supporters call it a “labeling” bill, this new DARK Act (S.764) actually exempts most current genetically engineered (GE) foods from being labeled. That’s right—according to the FDA’s comments to Congress, this bill would cause many GMOs to go unlabeled.
This bill gives corporations the power to hide GMOs by using digital QR codes that can only be read by smartphones. It also allows for corporations to put an 800 number or website on products instead of any clear label, which puts the burden on the consumer.
As if anyone has the time to point their smartphone at a code, call an 800 number, or go on a website for each and every product they are buying in the supermarket, then sift through a bunch of extraneous information just to get some basic information that 90 percent of consumers want on the package to begin with!
Please call President Obama at 866-942-5138 and ask him to veto the sham GMO labeling bill.
And there’s another reason QR codes aren’t the answer. They discriminate against more than a third of all Americans who do not own smart phones. That means low-income people, people of color, and the elderly will be denied their right to know since they are more likely not to own smart phones. That’s more than 100 million Americans who will have no way of accessing GMO information labeled with QR codes.
Meanwhile, the bill preempts the strong GE food labeling laws of Vermont, Connecticut, and Maine, the GE fish labeling law of Alaska, and the GE seed labeling laws of Vermont and Virginia. This bill is a gift from Congress to all the multinational food companies that resented the clear disclosures required by state laws: disclosures that 90 percent of American consumers say they want.
When he first ran for President, Barack Obama pledged to support GMO labeling. Now it’s time for him to follow through on that promise, and to support your right to know what’s in your food. Tell the President to put Americans' right to know ahead of the interests of multinational corporations.
Call the Whitehouse at 866-942-5138 and sign the petition to President Obama and tell him to veto this discriminatory sham GMO labeling bill and work to ensure the Right to Know of EVERY American.
Thanks for speaking out,
