Dear Green American,
Key senators have reached a deal on Big Biotech’s Dream Bill that will ban state GMO labeling and instead require QR codes, 1-800 numbers, or other labeling schemes that require you to work to figure out if there are GMOs in your food.
The Senate could vote on this latest version of the DARK Act today.
Please call your senators and tell them to oppose bill S. 764 today at 877-796-1949.
It's critical that you call even if you have called before. Your voice is important. The only reason we were able to defeat the DARK Act before is because the American public stood up for our right to know what’s in our food.
The new bill (S. 764), a compromise between Senators Stabenow (D-MI) and Roberts (R-KS), is completely unacceptable and will prevent consumers from actually seeing if a product contains GMOs.
Vermont's mandatory labeling law went into effect on July 1, and many companies have started to put clear GMO labels on their food packaging all across the country to comply with the law. We have already seen clear GMO labels on products from Kellogg’s, General Mills, PepsiCo, Mars, ConAgra, and Campbell’s.
Yet this clear on-package GMO label will quickly disappear if this bill is passed into law.
This could be our last chance for GMO labeling.
Please call your senators at 877-796-1949 and tell them to oppose bill S. 764.
This bill will stop Vermont's and other states' clear on-package labeling laws and replace them with uninformative QR codes, a symbol, 1-800 numbers, or a statement on packages referring people to websites for more information.
The bill also defines genetically engineered food to exclude many of the GMOs on the market.
Even if you’ve already called and written your senators, PLEASE CALL AGAIN: 877-796-1949.
Big Biotech food companies are working hard to avoid using 4 simple words: “produced with genetic engineering”.
If this bill passes, we’ll be left permanently in the dark about the food we buy and feed our families.
Tell your senators to reject bill S. 764 and any compromise that restricts states' rights and doesn't include clear labels that say “produced with genetic engineering”.
Thanks for all you do,
