Dear Green American,
Great news! The USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) may finally consider the health of the planet in their dietary guidelines (a.k.a. “MyPlate,” formerly known as the “Food Pyramid”)!
But, Big Food, the companies that poison our planet and risk our health, are already fighting back.
Tell the USDA and HHS: Protect our health and our planet, not Big Food’s profits.
This is huge in the fight for a sustainable food system because it means that the US government may recommend food that is good for both our health and the environment – they go hand in hand.
This shift in the Dietary Guidelines toward sustainability would have a ripple effect throughout our entire food system.
Not surprisingly, the meat industry lobbyists and corporate PR machines are out in full force. They’re trying to push the Obama administration to ignore sustainability and to leave recommendations for reduced meat consumption out of the guidelines.
Take action now: Sign the petition and help counter Big Food’s lobby machine.
The fight over dietary guidelines is a classic case of industry spin vs. independent science. The guidelines’ advisory committee -- an independent panel of experts -- is recommending a diet higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods on both health and environmental grounds. This would help shift us away from a food system reliant on factory farms and industrial meat production, which have devastating impacts on our soil, water, and climate -- and our health.
We have the science and the economics on our side -- but we have to make sure our message isn’t drowned out by all the industry spin. That’s why we are proud to be joining with Friends of the Earth and a coalition of allied organizations in mobilizing for better nutrition policy.
Tell the USDA and HHS to protect our health and the planet instead of Big Food's interests.
The science is clear: a diet with less factory-farmed meat and more sustainable plant-based foods is better for our health, our pocketbooks and the planet. And eating more locally- and organically-produced foods -- both plants and animals -- is even better.
Tell the USDA and HHS: Stand up for our health and the planet in the Dietary Guidelines!
